ERGONOMICS: Get on the Ball

Welcome to the Ergonomics series!  We spend so much time dealing with other people's health... what about yours?  This series will give you some tips to avoid strain and stay comfy at work.

er·go·nom·ics[ur-guh-nom-iks]: "Ergonomics uses knowledge from anatomy, mechanics, physiology and psychology to utilize human energy most effectively. Something that is ergonomic is designed for safe, comfortable, and efficient use. For example, a computer keyboard with an ergonomic design is designed to help the user avoid carpal tunnel syndrome and wrist pain." (MedicineNet.com)

Did you know that some people use an exercise ball instead of a chair when working?

There is some controversy as to the merits of this, but it's becoming a popular trend.  Let's take a look!

Healthy Alberta has a very good article about this!  I encourage you to read, but here's the "Coles Notes" version:
  • Sitting puts pressure on your back, more so than standing.
  • Getting off your chair is the best thing you can do for your muscles and lower back.
  • Sitting on a ball for a long time may cause even more discomfort for your lower back.
  • Slumping on your ball is worse than slumping in a chair because you have less support.
  • "Active sitting" helps strengthen your core muscles.
  • Think of your time on the ball as a short (muscle) training session.
  • Having the right size ball is important.
Great info, Healthy Alberta!

Now let's pop over to posturedoc of Core Wellness TV.  He's a bit long-winded, but I like him! (As someone who worked in TV for so long, it's hard not to critique... but he seems very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful.  Great tips, Dr. Steve!)

Here's his, um, "TV episode" on using a ball at your desk with helpful pointers on finding the right ball for the job!

And just for fun.... let's see how the ergo industry is responding to this trend with ball/chair hybrids! (What? Yes!)
